Today isn’t just Thursday, it’s R U OK? day. Founded by Gavin Larkin, whose father Barry took his own life at the age of 55, it aims to prevent suicide by encouraging conversation and connection.
In the time it takes to have a coffee and ask someone you care about if they are ok, you can stop little problems becoming big ones.
“It could be alcohol problems, relationship problems, anything,” R U OK Day campaign director Janina Nearn said. “We’re a suicide prevention campaign, to work at the early stages of that continuum, rather than be the crisis support at the end.”
R U OK? is such a simple concept – today and everyday of the year. It’s really about reaching out, sharing our lives and listening without judgement. Who are you going to ask, ‘are you ok?’
And one more thing…On Monday night Australian Story screened an incredible perspective-jolting episode on Gavin Larkin. In case you missed it, you can watch it here.
