A Weekend Away in the Grampians

I have a theory – one night away in the country is all it takes to feel like you’ve had a decent break from the daily grind. Especially, when it’s in a magical part of the world like the Grampians.

Last weekend, I headed out of town for 24 hours with Montara Grampians Wines. The last time I was in their neck of the woods I was on a school camp, hiking, trying miserably to pitch a tent and eating tins of baked beans. This time round, it was a very different experience! So I thought I’d share with you a little of what I did, where we visited and what I loved.

Getting There

GreenShareCar made sure we arrived at Montara Wines safe and sound. Nestled just outside Ararat, the drive took about two hours from Melbourne.

What We Did

We spent the afternoon exploring Montara Wines, a family-owned boutique vineyard that recently received its 5-star winery status in James Halliday’s 2016 Wine Companion.  Chief winemaker, Leigh Clarnette, and the Stapleton family talked us through the art and science that goes into making their beautiful cool climate wines.

We ate. We drank. We had a ball barrel tasting and walking through the vines. We also sat on the veranda with Lvly a thoughtful, same day gift service, and learnt how to make floral wreaths…and then we drank some more (all in the name of research of course!)

At the end of the day, I declared my favourite tipple was the 2013 Montara Grampians Sauvignon Blanc. While I’m not normally a savvy b drinker, it was clean, crisp and terribly easy to drink in the sunshine!

Where We Ate

For lunch, Sicilians put on an incredible home cooked, Lebanese spread. Then as the sun went down, we headed to Harvest Halls Gap, a recently opened provedore and cafe with a real passion for showcasing and serving up local produce. To cap of the weekend, we tucked into a seriously good brekky at Vines Cafe & Bar – the bacon alone is reason enough to visit Ararat!

Where We Stayed

After a full day, we hit the sack at The Chamblar Motel. This sweet little hotel was immaculately presented and run by a family who couldn’t be more welcoming.

Montara Wines are sharing the love and for the next two weeks are offering you 20% off their wines. Just enter ‘Checks1’ at the checkout.
