It’s Tuesday which means it’s time for a good ol’ serving of Tuck Shop Take Away. Let’s check in with Karina and Clinton and see what they’ve been up as they dream, create and roll their sleeves up to turn their gem of an idea into a business.
As another page turns we moved on to the next stage of preparation for opening day with the hunt beginning for staff members. This part is one of the hardest things to get my head around, I’ve been an employee but I’ve never been an employer. I know how hard it is to find good staff and that when you do you hold on to them for dear life. I’m nervous that we will even find anyone by opening date let alone the perfect ones, it seems impossible but we remain positive.
We met with the lovely James from Mister Close on Tuesday. He reached out to us after reading the first piece for Checks and Spots and offered any help he could as he was in our shoes only 2 years ago. We sipped tea and chatted about the power of social media, listening to your customers and how darn hard this all is, although you’d never trade it for the world. One amazing part of all this is the wonderful people we have met and how generous and willing to help they all have been, it’s truly heart-warming.
Mid-week we took a mini road trip out to the countryside for some shopping which was the ideal setting for some fresh air and rejuvenation. We went to the Mill Markets in Ballarat and Daylesford as well as to Ruth Howlett Collectables in Smythesdale. We came back with the boot full of goodies including stools, Fowlers Vacola jars, a vintage school wall clock, enamel soup cups, an old lolly jar and a very cool “tip tin”.
Our opening date keeps getting put back more and more. Between setbacks, unwanted surprises and darn public holidays (“have a great long weekend!” they all say…. “We have a business to open, we need that day!” the voice in my head yells back while I force a smile), it seems like it is taking forever, well certainly longer than we anticipated. Soon enough though we will be swinging the doors open for the first day, taking happy snaps of it and not looking back.
