In The Days of Our Lives we meet some fascinating and creative folk and take a look at what their typical day holds. Far from being about the mundane, it is a celebration of what it takes to juggle the day-to-day with big ideas, a successful business and a full home life. It’s about keeping all the balls in the air – what is important and what isn’t. It’s about (extra)ordinary moments that fill our every day.

This week we meet Tammi Ireland, a Sydney-based publicist who works around the clock for consumer agency, WordStorm Public Relations. An avid list-maker and social media addict (I wonder how she’d go with my March Write to Change?!), Tammi has a passion to see the little guys succeed.

From starting her day with a dip in the ocean to inspiring pro bono work for Hands Across the Water, this is a day in Tammi’s life.

Wake up to my iPhone alarm and stumble out of bed, into swimmers and toward Bondi Beach.

 

6.03 am

Quick swim in the ocean and walk along the sand to wake me up for the day ahead.

6.43 am

Back home to shower using Qsilica products. Turn on to YouTube and find a TEDx talk to watch while I put on some light makeup (always Clinique, NARS and Laura Mercier) and spray some Batiste dry shampoo on my roots – it’s the time-poor woman’s saviour!

 

7.23 am

Throw on some clothes for work in my signature black, add some thin gold jewellery and rush to catch the bus to Taylor Square in Darlinghurst

8.07 am

Grab a soy cappuccino at Bill’s on Crown Street in Surry Hills on the walk into the office. I love the clean, crisp atmosphere here and I always bring visitors from out-of-town to  Bill’s for their signature ricotta hotcakes.

 

8.13 am

Arrive at the office and catch up with the team before glancing over my top sites (News.com.au, Into The Gloss, Sous Style, Daily Life, NYC PR girls) and checking my clients’ social media channels for overnight activity.

8.45 am

Prep for the day ahead by going over the To Do list, organising meeting agendas and printing important documents.

 

9.23 am

Scan coverage that has come out for my clients in today’s magazines – it’s a good day today, with quite a few clippings to send off!

 

9.55 am

Update journalist databases before heading into my first client meeting of the day, where we run through coverage of their product that has come out and that is due to come out.

Out of one client meeting and straight into another!

 

12.10 pm

Write a media release for our company’s pro bono client, Hands Across The Water, a magnificent not-for-profit charity that supports orphans in Thailand following the Boxing Day tsunami.

Update Google Reader with new websites to follow. Google Reader is essential for keeping tabs on the articles I want to check out but don’t have time to read during the day

 

1.05 pm

Head to lunch across the road at El Loco in Surry Hills with the other Account Managers. I always get their house salad – an amazing mix of cabbage, fennel, radish, tofu, tortilla and queso fresca.

 

1.40 pm

Arrive back to the office to gifts from other PRs and new magazines, which are checked for client coverage.

 

1.52 pm

Work on a report for a past client, respond to call-outs on behalf of current clients, proof some media releases for my colleagues and get lost in the rush that always seems to happen post-lunch.

3.10 pm

Go through my emails with a fresh coffee and re-do my To Do list for the week. Take a call on business development from a new client – this one is about Instagram, so I hop on there and get lost for a few minutes (I’m an addict!)

 

3.54 pm

Send a media release to a client for approval before we pitch it out to journalists. Hop online to buy tickets for friends and I to an NBL game this coming weekend. Check emails once more and write thank you cards to journalists who supported my clients this week

 

5.00 pm

Bid adieu to the interns (always a great help!) and finish a client report to send to my director for approval.

 

5.40 pm

Google my clients’ competitors to see what, if anything, they’re doing in the media.

 

6.00 pm

Check all my clients’ social media channels and have a read through my saved Google Reader web articles, making notes in my Moleskine journal.

 

6.20 pm

Upload media releases to an online media resource, log off and double-check my To Do list for the following week.

7.10 pm

Meet a friend and fellow PR for drinks at The Winery in Surry Hills, my absolute favourite spot in Sydney.

 

9.15 pm

Start to head home, checking social media on the way. Wash and blow-dry hair, flick through some articles online.

 

10.00 pm

Lights out, bed time!
