In The Days of Our Lives, we meet some fascinating and creative folk and take a look at what their typical day holds. Far from being about the mundane, it is a celebration of what it takes to juggle the day-to-day with big ideas, a successful business and a full home life. It’s about keeping all the balls in the air – what is important and what isn’t. It’s about (extra)ordinary moments that fill our every day.

This week I’d like to introduce you to Matt Bywater, one half of Beer Gypsies. Specialising in craft beer, cider and wine from around Victoria, Beer Gypsies get the good times flowing with their unique ‘on tap’ mobile beverage catering service.

This is a day in Matt’s life…

6.00 am

Wake up from my 8 month old son Otis who wants to play and make sure his daddy is up playing with him.

6.20 am

After squeezing an extra 20 minutes sleep, get up and put kettle on for a coffee and switch the laptop on.

6.30 am

Will generally handball a dirty nappy off to Tess my wife while I make everyone some breakfast, we all sit together for 20 – 30 mins and talk about our day.

7.00 am

Run through emails and set up my planner for the day and what needs to be done. Check ticket sales for our new years event, A Gypsy New Years Eve, or see what jobs we have coming up this weekend.

7.45 am

Shoot my business partner, Daniel, a quick text to see what he has on for the day as we try to co-ordinate round 2 of coffee and a catch up to work through who is doing what in the lead up to the weekend events. Do the rest of my morning routine, shower, teeth etc then get ready to head out by around 8:15am

8:30 am

Meet Dan at our local coffee shop (The Lilydale General) and have a chat about sales, money and jobs for the week.

Generally Daniel is in charge of all the logistics and operations of a function and I take care of all the business development, administration and finance. So I will give Dan the running sheet of what stock has been ordered and who is working on the function and he will co-ordinate pick up times and deliveries of stock.

Dan is also a graphic designer and excellent photographer so he looks after all our website, graphics and designed our logo. Outside of Gypsy hours he does a lot of freelance design and expands his portfolio.

9.00 am

Once we break for the day I will generally head into the city as I will have at least one or two appointments with either corporate businesses looking to hold events/functions or catering and wholesale opportunities which I will have organsied. This will take me to around 3:00pm

4.00 pm

I try to be back home by 4:00pm to go through more emails. Generally by this stage my inbox generally has a few wedding or corporate enquiries come through.

From 4 to 5 is also quoting time and I will try and do this as efficiently as I can as well as help out around the house.

5:00 pm

Get ready for work as I also work part time at the local pub in Healesville from 6 – 11:15 pm.

11:15 pm

I head home to find my little family all tucked in bed sound asleep. Normally Otis has taken up my whole side of the bed. If I have the guts I will try and settle him down in his bed but if the day has been a good day I will give him a little push over and try and get a bit of rest in our comfortable but crowded bed, before the next day starts.
