In The Days of Our Lives we meet some fascinating and creative folk and take a look at what their typical day holds. Far from being about the mundane, it is a celebration of what it takes to juggle the day-to-day with big ideas, a successful business and a full home life. It’s about keeping all the balls in the air – what is important and what isn’t. It’s about (extra)ordinary moments that fill our every day.
This week I’d like to introduce you to the 2013 Victorian Young Achiever of the Year, Daniel Flynn. Dan’s a seriously impressive dreamer and do-er who founded social enterprise Thankyou Water, when he was just 19 years old. Launched in 2008, the sole purpose of this bottled water product was to fund safe water projects in developing nations and create real change.
Just recently, Dan has lead the company rebranding of Thankyou Water to Thankyou, and launched two new ranges, Thankyou Food and Thankyou Body Care. To date, the business has also been able to help over 56,000 people gain access to safe water.
This is a day in Dan’s life…
A Day in the Life of Daniel Flynn, Thankyou
Wake up and head to the gym. I’ll be honest and say there are also days when I sleep until the very last minute and then head to the office, but I’m making a conscious effort to get a exercise regime happening – I think it helps keeps things balanced.
Eat a big bowl of the best breakfast cereal going around – Thankyou Muesli 🙂 – before heading to the office to kick off the day.
Arrive at our office in Collingwood. Our office is a bit of a miracle in itself – without a lot of generosity from our landlord and donated time and services from all kinds of tradespeople, we’d probably still be working out of a one room office with zero natural light. I’m pretty thankful for an amazing space to work in every day. The first thing I do when I get in is chat about the day ahead with my PA, Jess.
Get started on the emails. I’m pretty big on putting aside time for this throughout the day, otherwise the day gets away from you and you end up with 60 unread emails in your inbox.
Morning coffee run is a bit of a routine in the office. Generally most of our small team will head down to a nearby cafe to get coffee together. I think it’s really important to have fun as a team and for me our morning coffee runs are a big part of keeping a fun culture at Thankyou.
I attend a lot of sales meetings with our National Sales Manager, Kirk. It’s great meeting with potential retailers and getting to share the Thankyou story.
We try to have lunch as a team whenever possible. This is usually followed by a game of pretty serious table tennis, if time permits. Our board table is the same size specs as a table tennis table and can be converted in less than a minute! 🙂
I attend a lot of speaking engagements at schools. It’s an honour to speak about the Thankyou journey and how we’ve got to where we are now. I love the idea of inspiring young people to go after their dreams and not be afraid to go after things that other people might say are impossible. This is a really fun part of what I do.
I usually have meetings with one of my team. For example, I’ll meet with our marketing director, Justine (who also happens to be my wife) to talk about upcoming campaigns. I love dreaming big about the future of Thankyou.
Finish off emails for the day, return any phone calls and deal with any pressing matters that have come up when I’ve been in meetings.
Pack up my laptop and head home with Justine.
Dinner. Either we’ll cook at home or sometimes we’ll head out to a great little pho place not far from home. I’ve become a bit obsessed with pho ever since I headed to Vietnam for work earlier this year.
Do a final check of my emails and make sure I’m all ready for the next day.
Off to bed! 🙂
