In The Days of Our Lives we meet some fascinating and creative folk and take a look at what their typical day holds. Far from being about the mundane, it is a celebration of what it takes to juggle the day-to-day with big ideas, a successful business and a full home life. It’s about keeping all the balls in the air – what is important and what isn’t. It’s about (extra)ordinary moments that fill our every day.
This week, I’d like to introduce you to Aimee Marks the organic entrepreneur behind TOM Organic.
Driven by a love of design, Aimee wanted change the way tampons were packaged. But, when she started learning about the impact that conventional feminine hygiene products have on our health and planet, her idea quickly evolved into something more. “There’s a reason we don’t eat plastic and drink bleach: because they don’t belong inside us. But how often do we take the time to read the list of ‘ingredients’ on our box of tampons and pads?” says Aimee.
And so, TOM Organic was created. Certified Organic and totally chemical free, TOM is a whole new approach to ‘that time of the month’. And if you ask me, seriously the best looking packaging you’ll find in a supermarket!
This is a day in Aimee’s life.
Wake up early and take my two black Labradors, Olive and Bear, for a walk along the beach. We live in St Kilda and I always find it such a peaceful way to start the day.
Come home make myself a green juice and breakfast. I usually make up a big batch of homemade muesli on the weekend which makes weekday brekkie super easy and healthy! At the moment I’m loving the quinoa granola from Gwyneth Paltrow’s It’s All Good book.
I drop by the market to pick up some fresh flowers for the office, it’s so important to have fresh greenery in the space and it’s coming into Spring so there are some gorgeous blooms around!
Arrive at TOM HQ, we are super lucky to work out of an amazing shared office building in St Kilda with some other incredible companies like Dumbo Feather Magazine and Beatrix Rowe Interior Designers. I love that we get to have this “second home” filled with inspiring, creative people, with a beautiful garden full of herbs, fruit trees and flowers, there are even beehives on the roof and Rooftop Honey harvest honey every season!
9.00 am – 10:30 am
I try to block out my morning to catch up on emails and make sure that I’m on top of everything. It’s important to actually make a specific time for this in my schedule otherwise you can get stuck there all day!
We have a team WIP (work in progress) to talk about what everyone is working on and chat through any roadblocks anyone may be having. We’re quite a close team and work in an open office so it’s a very collaborative workspace.
Lunch. We often have guests and brand ambassadors like Lola Berry for lunch. It’s a great way to catch up informally and bond over yummy food!
Product development meeting with my team to work on new products, this is one of the most exciting parts of my job.
Finance meeting with my General Manager to talk through budgets and sales.
Phone meeting with our Woolworths buyer to check in and discuss sales and new marketing ideas.
Head over to South Melbourne to meet with our creative agency to approve artwork for a new media campaign. I love the parts of the day where I get to bring the brand to life.
I head to boxing. I have a boxing session once a week with my dad, it’s a great way for us to have a regular catch up and exercise at the same time. As an entrepreneur himself, he’s always been a great inspiration to me.
Head home to have dinner with my husband, we got married in April so it still feels a little weird to say that! We try to eat yummy, healthy, easy to cook dinners, like a vege stack or salads packed full of delicious vegies. I love Therese Cutter’s Healthy Chef – it’s a great recipe resource.
I do a quick scan and catch up on any last minute emails and make sure my calendar is sorted for tomorrow.
Take a long warm bath to wash away the day. It’s great to get out of my “work” zone, but I often find that these calm moments can also bring a lot of clarity and is often the place where I come up with great ideas! Haha!
Off to bed ready for a good night’s sleep!
