DIY: Easy Christmas Wrapping Ideas and Inspiration

To celebrate 40 years of creativity, Spotlight invited me to get a little crafty. So, after visiting my local store and picking up a whole stack of bits and pieces, I thought I’d share with you some super easy, Christmas wrapping ideas that you can also whip up at home.

DIY: Ceramic Christmas Decorations

We’ve got a bit of a tradition in our house – every year the kids and I make a special something to go with our Christmas gifts. This year we made some pretty ceramic Christmas decorations from air dry clay.

All we did was roll out the clay and use cookie cutters to cut out stars and discs. To decorate some of them, we pressed my grandmother’s doilies into the clay to create a delicate inprint. Then to finish them off, we used a metal skewer to make a hole at the top so that we could thread or hang the decorations and then we left them in the sun for a day or two to completely dry out.

What we used: Darwi Classic Modelling Clay – White ($14.95)

DIY: Christmas Gift Tags

Christmas Wrapping Ideas Inspiration DIYAnother quick project that the kids and I did was to make Christmas gift cards with a very sweet stamp set I found in Spotlight. While I was there I also picked up some thick textured cards and an ink pad and they were in stamping heaven!

What I used: Studio Calico Wooden Stamp Set ($24.99) // Becky Higgins Project Life Textured Cards – Honey Edition ($9.99) // Memento Stamp Pad  – Tuxedo Black ($12.95)

Gift Wrapping with Fabric

For something that’s both unique and environmentally friendly, why not ditch wrapping paper all together and use fabric to create your own ‘Furoshiki’ or Japanese wrapping cloth. I stuck to a palette of white and red, and found some spotty fabric which was perfect.

For a handy guide on wrapping with Furoshiki, check out this ‘How To’ diagram from Japan’s Ministry of the Environment.

What I used: Polka dot fabric ($9.99 per metre)

The Perfect Finishing Touch

For the gift that keeps on giving why not add a Christmas decoration to your wrapping? Or for a finishing touch that’s full of festive cheer, use a Christmas bell that jingles and jangles!

What I used: Simplicity Maxi Red Ric Rac 1.83 ($5.99), Jolly & Joy 12 pk Box of Wooden Ornaments ($7.99), Leather thonging from our Christmas Table photoshoot, 12 pk Assorted Ornamental Bells  ($3.99)

Wrapping with Found Bits and Pieces

Get creative and look for clever details that will instantly elevate simple gift wrapping. For example, I ditched the tacky synthetic bow for a crochet flower and swapped out ribbon for pom poms.

What I used: Simplicity Pom Pom Trim 1.22m ($4.99), Crochet Flower ($5.99)

Disclosure: Spotlight gifted me a $100 gift card to purchase items for this post //  All reviews of brands, products and experiences on Checks and Spots are genuine and reflect my honest opinion. I will only ever write about what I truly believe in.
