The Days of Our Lives: Yuge Yu, Fashion Designer

In The Days of Our Lives we meet some fascinating and creative folk and take a look at what their typical day holds. Far from being about the mundane, it is a celebration of what it takes to juggle the day-to-day with big ideas, a successful business and a full home life. It’s about keeping all the balls in the air – what is important and what isn’t. It’s about (extra)ordinary moments that fill our every day.

Let me introduce you to Yuge. Just last year, she launched her understated yet serenly sexy label, Yuge. While it was quite a departure from her ‘previous life’ as a lawyer, Yuge is a true reflection of her creative history at the sewing table and innate personal style.

Combining texture, colour and exclusive prints, each Yuge design encourages reverse variants or adjustable options so that the wearer can truly make it their own. Clever, oui?

From scribbling ideas on brown wrapping paper to starting the day with a languid bath, this is a day in Yuge’s life.

…..

I don’t think I ever have two days that are the same, which makes for a difficult task in describing a typical day but here goes!

6.00 am

This morning I’m on a flight up to Byron Bay to coordinate a few things in the shop that my husband David and I run called, In This Street. I’ve got our little Wen in tow on her first ever flight and so far as I write this she’s sound asleep in my arms.

6.00 – 8.00 am

Usually though, depending on when the first meeting or appointment is scheduled, my mornings are spent in bed, writing emails, phone calls and texts organising the days and weeks ahead…it’s the best office…what could be better than snuggles in between emails!

8:30 am

The only real constant are my morning baths with Wen, lots of singing, really loudly and really off tune, lots of giggles and the occasional Bon Jovi ballad!

9.00 am – 7.00 pm

By about 9am things are in full swing with meetings with stockists and suppliers, skyping my production manager, coordinating photoshoots, liaising with the shop, decorating and redecorating the studio, sending off orders, updating my website, and of course the peppering throughout my day of feeds, diaper changes, and giving loads of attention to my loves.

Wen is like my little koala if not strapped to me in her pouch asleep, she’s in my arms or right by my side in her pusher! I have real detachment issues!!

There are days where I get to sit down for a sandwich or sushi at lunch and other days where I look at the time and it’s suddenly 4pm and the desperate hunt for a cheese roll takes over.

The day begins to wind down by about 5 pm and I’m able to start focusing on the design ideas that I’ve sketched or jotted down on the many scrolls of brown wrapping paper I use as my notebook or on my phone throughout the day. I try and have some time on my sewing machine to experiment with ideas and play around with fabrics and drape before I’m in a position to have a new pattern mocked up.

 7.00 pm – 11.00 pm

The evenings are my sacred time when I can close the doors and ‘lock in’ at home with my family.

I’m not a particularly good cook but I’m now trying to make dinner at home at least thee times a week and usually something very simple. Otherwise we’re at our local favourites Ladro for pizza and pasta or Aka Tombo for the best Japanese – both places are on Greville Street, Prahran.

Having recently discovered Apple TV, I’ve now found myself usually in bed by about 8pm with my laptop in tow, baby on one side, babe on the other, ready to settle in for a night of Game of Thrones, emails, chats, debriefs and brainstorming.

Neither David nor I have ever stuck to a set bedtime, we’re kind of like teenagers falling asleep with the lights on, TV on and music still playing in the next room!

It’s actually now past midnight as I manage to get to the end of this post…

By 6am, it all starts again to a different tune!
