The Days of Our Lives: Megan Carmont, Code Love

In The Days of Our Lives we meet some fascinating and creative folk and take a look at what their typical day holds. Far from being about the mundane, it is a celebration of what it takes to juggle the day-to-day with big ideas, a successful business and a full home life. It’s about keeping all the balls in the air – what is important and what isn’t. It’s about (extra)ordinary moments that fill our every day.

This week we meet Megan Carmont, a stunningly talented artist and designer behind the morse code inspired jewelry range, Code Love.

The idea for Code Love came when one of Megan’s dear friends was very ill. Wishing to acknowledge her friend’s inspiring inner stength, Megan crafted an intricate necklace of semiprecious stones that used morse code to convey the message of ‘strength.’ With its secret message this piece became a powerful and treasured bond between them.

“I love the concept of wearing or giving a piece of jewelry that carries a message of love, identity or memory,” says Megan. “All women love wearing beautiful jewelry and a piece carrying a message or special word is so much more precious.”

This is a day in Megan’s life…

6.00 am

Alarm goes off (hit snooze – 9 more minutes please!)

Rise and shine, go into wake our 11 year old daughter, Ava. Quickly throw on some workout gear, check e-mails (trash, trash and review things that need getting back to – food for thought!) make a quick “on the go” breakfast, pack lunch boxes (always nicer if freshly made)

6.30 am

Make sure Will, our 14 year old, is getting up. Leave something healthy out for his breakfast. Remind him to take his lunch and double check sporting destinations for after school pick up. Kiss the boys good bye and head out the door.

6.50 am

In the car (a little bit late). Drop yesterdays orders in the letter box at the end of street and drop Ava to diving at 7am. Pop into the local green grocer to pick up fruit and veg for the next two days.

7.30 am

Training! Get told what to do for an hour and feel great when finished. On the way home pop into my local café and get a much needed piccolo “to go”.

Arrive home grab Chester (4yr old tan Staffy) and have a walk to the beach with him. Grab another coffee. This is a lovely time of the day, it kind of clears my head – ready to start the day.

9.30 am

Home, shower and get back to e-mails, process orders, research/contact potential stockists, service and chat to current stockists, source materials, update website, Facebook, Instagram etc.

11.30 ish

Grab something quick to eat. I try to make the afternoons my creative time. I head into my studio at the other end of the house, turn on music and start creating bespoke orders and coming up with new designs. This is my favourite part of the day. I can get lost in my creativity so I always set an alarm for school pick up…it’s so easy to forget the time!

2.55 pm

Alarm goes off (no snooze this time!)

School pick up. Grab Ava she gets changed in the car and I pick up some afternoon tea on the way to dance. Drop her off, pick Will up from school sport and drop him home to start homework. Turn the car around yet again and pick up Ava from dance. Phew!

5.30 ish

Finally home! Quickly pop into the study to check e-mails. Start preparing dinner and getting on with the long list of evening domestic duties like washing, school notes, supervising home work etc.

6.45 ish

Richie arrives home. This means wrestle and trampoline time for the kids, Rich  and Chester. Homework can wait.

7 ish

Sit down at dinner table for family dinner – eat, talk, discuss, laugh.

Kids and Richie clean up after dinner (I clean up after kids and Richie!)

Finish homework or a little TV together…

8.30 pm

Ava to bed (by the time she stops fussing its really 9pm) and Will to bed 9pm to read for ½ hr after all electronic apparatus has been evicted from his room.

9.00 pm

Sneak into study or studio (depending on orders) for just a little more research or admin.

10.30 pm

Turn off computer as my lovely other half Richie is making those noises that you know mean enough already! Jump into shower and jump into bed.

Phew! Lights out. Night night….
