Welcome to What I Know…
In this new monthly series we’ll get to meet creators, makers, entrepreneurs and do-ers to find out what makes them tick. By hearing about the things they’ve done right, what they’ve learnt along the way and how they stay at the top of their game, we’ll get to know the person behind the success story.
This month, we meet Sali Stevanja, an entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor who co-founded the luxury activewear e-tailer, Stylerunner, with her sister, Julie. In just a few short years, Stylerunner has grown at a seriously impressive rate. They’ve experienced 600% growth year on year and now ship their impeccably presented product to more than 80 countries around the world.
Ahead of her involvement with the Online Retailer Conference & eCommerce Expo (22-23 July, Sydney) I caught up with Sali to find out what she knows about the road to success, making mistakes and gut instinct.
Sali Stevanaja, Co-Founder Stylerunner
What I know about turning an idea into a business…It takes a lot of passion and determination. One key is to get connected, don’t feel like you need to know all the answers or do everything solo. Reach out to people and work smarter through collaboration.
What I know about success…It takes hard work and a lot of sacrifice but the ability to inspire others through your own success is for me the greatest part.
What I know about growing an ecommerce brand…Growing an ecommerce brand takes constant innovation. You need to ensure that the end to end experience for the customer is flawless, from customer service ( live chat – social media), through to how beautifully it is presented to the ease of navigating through your site.
What I know about creating a business culture with a difference… I think culture is one of the most important facets that businesses often overlook. When you have a team who not only love what they do but they love the environment they work in, they are going to naturally want to achieve great results. Being creative with setting a rewarding culture can be anything from the team bonding activities you share, the working conditions / environment through to employee benefits.
What I know about making mistakes…Making mistakes is not necessarily a bad thing. I think when you recognise you’re human and that we will all make mistakes in life (be it professionally or personally), you then have the opportunity to learn from it without the emotion attached, allowing you to move forward more wiser.
What I know about gut instinct…I feel like we all have that intuition when something either just doesn’t feel right or when you know you’re onto an absolute winner. Trust your gut ALWAYS.
What I know about health…I know it’s fragile. I’m a huge advocate for being body aware, prevention is often better than a cure.
What I know about happiness…Happiness is all that really matters at the end of the day. Create an environment that fuels that, surround yourself with the right people and nourish your soul with good energy.
What I know about taking care of myself…I simply can’t function if I don’t take time to care for myself, fortnightly massages are at the top of my list!
