In The Days of Our Lives, we meet some fascinating and creative folk and take a look at what their typical day holds. Far from being about the mundane, it is a celebration of what it takes to juggle the day-to-day with big ideas, a successful business and a full home life. It’s about keeping all the balls in the air – what is important and what isn’t. It’s about (extra)ordinary moments that fill our every day.
This week, I’d like to introduce you to Sam Scally, the creator and designer behind the thoughtful and impeccably edited, Sam Brown Collection.
Having established a successful business in home styling with her sister, Sam recently turned her focus to simplifying her wardrobe to include just a few statement pieces. Drawing on her long experience in the fashion industry, Sam designed a few pieces for her personal wardrobe. After several friends approached Sam to fill orders on these pieces and a storeowner asked to view her next range, Sam decided to take things up a notch and create Sam Brown Collection.
Sourcing beautiful fabrics and collaborating with a great local maker is a big priority for Sam. She also wanted to focus on offering considered, yet striking pieces that are in stark contrast to the ‘churn and burn fashion’ that is hitting stores en masse.
This is a day in Sam’s life…

Wake with various limbs wrapped around me belonging to my 8-year-old daughter, Mabel, who has crawled into our bed. Then look across to find my husband half way on the floor.
Archie (12) and Atticus (10) are downstairs enjoying breakfast and pouring over the newspaper with my husband before he leaves for work. Kids get themselves dressed, pack their bags, I have a quick shower and don the workout gear.
Drop the kids at school, make a dash to shops for dinner ingredients, and drop home briefly before hitting the oval for an intense 1-hour training session which I dread and love simultaneously!
Grab a coffee and head home for a quick shower then check in on production of my range with my maker. Go over fits and last minute adjustments to garments, which usually run overtime, as we a both, love a chat!
Home to check emails. Work on website and invitation for upcoming range viewing in October.
Make myself a quick wrap. Work on castings for summer, settle accounts, answer emails, and text at least one or more of my three sisters to share insignificant but hilarious banter.
A delivery – the last of the fabric arrives. Tie up lose ends make some phone calls and head out to pick up kids from school.
Stop at Makers on the way to drop in fabric. I also stop at the printer too.
Pick up kids from school, scooter to local oval to exercise our dog, Ginny, while boys have a kick of the football
Home to cook dinner while chatting to kids and helping with homework.
My husband arrives home. We read with kids and share the all-important whispers and tuck in before bed.
He and I usually catch up on the day while we get the kitchen back in order and then it’s back on my laptop. This is indulgent time for me, as I love trawling through past and present fashion inspirations. I do a bit of sketching, for my next range while enjoying my last cup of tea for the night. I then make lunches, iron uniforms and I always know it’s time to go to bed when the stairs are looking too steep to climb!
Sam will be showing the summer range from Sam Brown Collection at two separate Melbourne locations on 9 and 16 October (I’ll be at the one on the 16th!), with a view to show in Sydney and eventually Queensland. You can find out more details here.
