In The Days of Our Lives we meet some fascinating and creative folk and take a look at what their typical day holds. Far from being about the mundane, it is a celebration of what it takes to juggle the day-to-day with big ideas, a successful business and a full home life. It’s about keeping all the balls in the air – what is important and what isn’t. It’s about (extra)ordinary moments that fill our every day.
This week, we meet Marie Jenkins the creator and founder of Kosema. Long before most of us recognised how potent natural skincare products could be, Marie started mixing up formulations in her kitchen using rose hip oil. Fast forward almost 20 years, and Kosmea is now an Australian company with an international success story.
From starting her day with meditation and cooking lunch for her team, to developing new formulas and steering her family-owned business, this is a day in Marie’s life.
I wake listening to the waves of the ocean crash onto the shore; I love living by the sea. I get up and meditate for about half an hour then I hit the sand for a half hour walk along the beach. I find this the best way to mentally and spiritually prepare for the day.
Breakfast is a cup of Roobos tea – I gave up caffeine 2 years ago, which was the hardest thing I have ever done but I have never felt better! I have 2 free-range organic eggs with organic baby spinach on toasted rye sourdough. Running your own business comes with inherent stressors and so I try to nourish my body with foods that contain nutrients to help me cope with any day to day stresses.
Shower and then I cover my face and body with our Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil. I don’t wear foundation but I always do my lips, cheeks and eyes; I have always been very creative and I love to experiment with new and different trends on the make-up/cosmetic front.
I arrive at our beautiful new offices on Glen Osmond Road Eastwood where we have opened our first Kosmea Day Spa! I set to work feeding our beautiful fish, arranging flowers in the various offices and rooms, lighting candles and oil burners throughout. I had a feng shui consultant guide me in setting up this office to ensure the best flow of energy and also that of my team!
I do a quick check of emails and respond to the most urgent immediately then I meet with my daughter Olivia, to run through various actions and projects. My children have all worked in the business at various times in their lives. But I always have encouraged my children to go after their dreams so my two older children are pursuing careers in the arts, whilst my youngest daughter Olivia, who is very much like me with a natural entrepreneurial spirit, has joined me in the business for the past 3 years.
I grab a quick cup of chai from our local café Bar 9 and then it’s in the boardroom for our fortnightly R&D meeting which involves me, my formulator of over 10 years, and heads of sales and marketing. This is one of the most rewarding times for me as I get to dream up ideas for skincare! I am so blessed to be doing what I love.
I’m back at my desk and it’s time to read through emails and answer/return phone calls. I like to compartmentalise my correspondence to allotted times in the day so as not to be constantly at the mercy of the email and telephone.
Lunch is mushrooms in olive oil with home-made organic penne pasta. I often cook at the office, usually feeding my daughter and any other members of the team who wander in. I love preparing and sharing food because it promotes a wonderfully creative, collaborative and congenial atmosphere to work in.
Teleconference with our Sydney-based public relations agency, elise garland public relations to discuss our plans for a very special event for our business – Kosmea will be 20 years this September! Like my own children, I am just so proud to see what this business, ‘my other baby’ has become today! I am so lucky to be doing what I love still after 20 years and have a wonderful team of people around me who share my passion and energy.
I like to be in market at least once a week and that means I go and do store visits looking at our range and also trends in food, health, beauty and skin care. I find a lot of inspiration from the food industry in particular, after all skin is the largest organ in our body and should be fed a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals to maintain cell health.
I go and visit my mother who has recently moved into a home. She is an inspiration to me on so many levels and her skin is better than most 30 year olds at 83 years of age!
Dinner is grilled flat head with organic potatoes, tomatoes and rocket and balsamic. Then it’s off to meet some friends for some gelato at local SA institution Cibo Espresso, where they make the best chocolate gelato!
Back home and I do my skincare regimen with the Kosmea range using our 100% cotton organic muslin cloth. I then do a quick review of emails and I am then into bed with a good book.
Lights out – good night xx
