South Africa’s Barbershops

As the cultural and social hub of South Africa’s townships, barbershops and salons are not just places to get your hair styled, but places to gather, gossip and come together as a community. They also happen to showcase sharp and snappy vernacular designs: renditions of the haircuts on offer as well as typographic demonstrations of each shop’s name.

In South African Township Barbershops and Salons, photographer Simon Weller, explores these barbershops (including Let’s Fix It Barbershop, Try Again Hair Shop and Look Alive Salon), their signage and their patrons. The result is a brutally beautiful book that is honest and intimate in sharing on of South Africa’s most important cultural traditions.
