As a beauty journalist I attract shiny lip-glosses, life-changing bronzers, age-defying mascara’s and youth infusing cheek creams like socks do lint. But following years trialling moisturiser that costs as much as a mortgage payment and colour compacts that double as designer clutches (true) I still find my beauty bag is full of budget buys. This was not by chance, but simply by choice. Chemist brands work just as well – if not BETTER – than the expensive stuff. True Story. Here’s my round up of the best the budget beauty buys you’ll want to add to your kit.
My mum used it, her mum used it and Kylie Minogue swears by it. I will not let you in on which woman I aim to emulate, but PONDS Dry Skin Cream is The Freaking BOMB! It’s thick. super dewy and settles on the skin in a non-sticky film. It does not disappear on contact and skin is left feeling super plump – as is your wallet – for hours afterwards.
(Recently I have had so many positive comments about my skin and I put it down to this winner. Spare the fancy new packaging at some chemists that costs way more and go old school with this steal from Chemist Warehouse.)
I hate foundation. War on the stuff I will continue to wage. I find it drying, ageing and simply wrong.com. If you want to even your complexion, compliment it, don’t cover it. Powders and heavy foundations are super dehydrating and only exacerbate lines and wrinkles. I pinky swear by La Roche Posay Anthelis XL SPF 50+ BB Tinted Cream. It literally melts into the skin (leaving an almost watery reflective film) and adapts to your natural tone, evening it out immediately. Voila! Rich skin, Rich Me! (It’s under $30 FYI)
For me, a glowy complexion is the Holy Grail. I was recently gifted L’Oreal Glam Bronze La Terra which I immediately earmarked for Mum – after I’d given it a whirl. Suffice to say it never made it to the old girl’s beauty cabinet and I’ve re-purchased (yes, parted with my own cash) two more compacts for my gym and swim bag!
At the moment, I am digging a deep, deep lip colour. There’s nothing easier than a rich plum lip against a bronzed complexion when you are applying all of the above with one foot out the door and the other on the car accelerator already. This super easy sweep of statement pigment makes you look put together in seconds. I’m pretty addicted to ModelCO Lip Lacquer Duo as it gives me two options for lips. (Not to mention I can pick it up from Woollies when I pop in for pasta and peas.) Oh….and you’re a fool if you think my ass couldn’t get any tighter because I use this as a cheek tint too. BOOM! Beauty bag complete.
